Ever wonder just how huge this World is?  Well, there's an archipelago of Islands that is about 80 miles wide by 60 miles long - about the size of the state of Deleware, with a 6,070 foot mountain on it.  The Kerguelen Islands is a place I've always wanted to visit, but its next to impossible to get there.  This is where it is:

Here's some pictures of what small parts of it look like.

It's like the World dictates "this place is off limits" to regular folks.  Any of y'all going there?  I might want to hitch a ride with you.

I don't have any plans at the moment. Afraid it might be swallowed up by rising tides and global warming.

Those islands are French, for about 300 years.

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/kerguelen-islands

They are located in the far southern reaches of the Indian Ocean, so far south they are covered with ice most of the year.

But if you’d like to visit, it’s possible on the French ship Marion Dufrense:

—-

In addition to the usual complement of scientists, researchers, technicians and construction workers, in recent years the Marion Dufresne has also played host to an increasing number of tourists (up to 14 per trip) who book passage for a period lasting about 28 days. A 9,000-kilometre (5,600 mi) passage includes guided tours of Crozet, Kerguelen, and Amsterdam Islands – with opportunities to view the local wildlife. The ship's cabin appointments are simple but comfortable, and several forms of entertainment and exercise are available on board. Meals served on board are considered to be of excellent quality; the dining room can seat up to 58 at a time in two seatings.[4]
—-
The islands are so very remote that even if there was an airport, the harsh freezing climate and icy terrain make it an undesirable location for visitors. The only way to and from the island is by ship, but if you plan to take what would basically be the worst vacation ever, a cabin is €15,000 and the ship departs only four times per year, so plan accordingly.

What a wonderful world, this is.

I have not changed my name and no, that is not me.

I have heard of the Kerguelen Islands, but there are so many more interesting places that I have not seen, I doubt that I'd go there.

Think of 50 to 100 Frenchmen in a research station on that beautiful desolate island 2,000 miles from civilization. 4 times a year a ship comes.

The rest of the time they measure data in a place unspoiled by humans, except them,

The pay, had better be good, is my take on it.

You are correct in my case. I do not remember having ever heard of this place.

Another measure of how big the world is: how many fruits do you suppose exist? There are 2000 TYPES of fruits. The western world regulary accesses 200 - but only a small variety within each type.
