In 1968 my most beautiful of my beautiful cousins married a boy named Robert, and they had me as part of their wedding. I was ten years old.
We were all Republicans, for generations.
But Bob had volunteered to go fight in Vietnam.
For one year, we waited for Bob to come home.
He’d write me letters, I’d read out loud at school.
His wife would call my Mama, her favorite aunt, and they’d cry on the phone until I wondered if my Mama had any tears left to cry.
Then Bob’s time got short, and shorter, and finally one day he arrived home. When he came to our farm to visit I took Bob squirrel hunting.
My hero broke down in tears and handed me back my rifle, and said I’ll never kill anything, ever again.
That didn’t include himself. Ten years later, he walked in his bathroom, and called my mother’s brother, his father in law, and said say goodbye for me, I’m going home. Bob was a casualty of the war, in 1979.
I was a pall bearer.
Here’s to you, Bob.

Mother Maybell came out with an answer song to What We’re Fighting For. I’d sing Dave Dudley’s version, then my cousin the same age as I am would answer with the Carter Family reply.
All the while a world away Bob was in the jungles of Vietnam, and we were so very proud of him, and what he stood for, and why he volunteered.
He was a point man, for a rifle company.
Better him than somebody else behind him, as he explained to me on that hillside where he’d take my rifle and shoot squirrels in the head in 1968, before he left.
I still go there today.
Bob took my rifle in 1969, and he said he couldn’t pull the trigger on a squirrel who had done him, no wrong.
