Did the US and others tell Gorbachev that nato wouldn't expand eastward or not? This was a promise made to secure the fall of the Iron curtain.

My point exactly.  Putin did as he pleased.  He merely uses NATO as a poor excuse.  Vapid, transparent communist-excuse.  Just like the Democrats.  Can't just say "I'm doing it because I can and will" - - needs to invent an excuse like a ******.

Fortunately Russia does have a thermonuclear deterrent. Our Saber rattling has an obvious limit.

Nuke them.  And, nuke them first.  When they aren't suspecting it.  Mark my words, I am right about this. Not if, but when - we will have a nuclear war.

I live within 50 miles of several priority targets. If there is a thermonuclear exchange I won't be around to find out what cat and obese long pig tastes like. Oh well...so long and  thanks for all the fish.

Probably.  Humans are actually quite resilient. Just look at Japan today.  It survived 2 nukes and they are better off today than they were prior to WWII.

Japan survived two 40 kiloton low yield nukes. We have artillery shells and man portable devices with higher power. Thermonuclear weapons have never been used. Russia has tested the largest, 150 MEGA tons. Makes the bombs we used on Japan look like a child's fun snap. These things can take out half a State. Not sure Ukraine is worth risking these being deployed.
