Take some money and go buy yourself a sense of humor.  Did you see the smilies face after the comment...it was a sarcastic shot at the Secretary who's comment was quoted in the linked article.

What type of degree you think most people have who work for CPS/APS, who work with charities who held homeless vet (or help those who show up at a VA hospital) have, how about those who work trying to get those with mental health issues and addictions off the street, or those who help families of those type of people navigate the state and federal bureaucratic black holes.  You know, the people you probably think are below you.  They are overwhelmingly social workers.  Most go into it with their eyes wide open related to pay (and usually benefits).  Someone needs to do it...so why not throw them a bone after 25 years.  After all, that's what Congress wanted to see happen.

I look at it as it's all about choices...

we all make those every time we buy a house, car, use credit cards and of course, advance our education...

every time I did one of the above, I understood the terms and ramifications of not meeting those terms...it's called a contract...

and still way better than a mafia loan shark...

I'll bet 90% of what they were forced to learn in school never gets used...EVER.

Wah..wah.. wah... no one forced the person to agree to the student loans. Nor did they force them to choose a major such as sociology, Spanish, or Russian where the employment prospects are limited if they exist at all. I knew that a bachelors in Economics was not going to directly translate to a job. Masters.. still a bit of a stretch. Phd.. reasonably high probability of a job.

When corporations get sued they file bankruptcy ............... to block the lawsuit. Every corporation signs a dotted line somewhere .................

90% of what I learned in college are things I never used.  Same for my son who is a CFO for a large company.  Same is true for a lot of "real" degree programs.  However, you cannot get a job in many professions without a college degree...and many of those require an advanced degree.

Would you prefer those people being forced to fend for themselves and have all of society (rather than only the elitist) turn their back on them?  Social work is an area I could never handle...far too often they encounter people who are at their rock bottom (admittedly often of their own accord) and/or deal with those who have been abused by others.  If I had to work in that field...I would probably end up killing someone, especially if they abused a baby.

Yes they do.  And student loans can be discharged in bankruptcy if it can be shown they cause an undue hardship on you or your dependents.  Maybe you should stop making **** up.

I can vouch for the first paragraph. I have a phd in economics and use almost none of what I learned in all of those years. I pursued it because I knew that with only a bachelors degree.. it was going to be a tough task getting a job with no experience in the field. I came  from a working class background ( warehouse, restaurant, and construction) so no experience in being a data analyst, economist, etc.

Nothing really surprising about that.
I can't say that much of what I learned from majoring in business at my college was ever used in any of the handful of companies I created.  Rodney Dangerfield's views on the subject in Back to School might even have been far more helpful!
