We should go because technology begets technology. Whatever tech we successfully build that could put a man on Mars can influence even better technology afterwards.

No problem cannot be solved. It's not about whether or not we can resolve those issues, it's about where our priorities lie.

The moon is just as inhospitable.
Two reasons:
1. The moon can be in reach for other nations as well. They will certainly fight us for land and all of that crap. If we get Mars, then we wouldn't have to worry about other countries occupying it, because their technology would be way too far behind.
2. Mars is larger and has at least a thin layer of atmosphere. It would be easier to make it more hospitable than the moon.

Can't they just have the astronauts moving body parts work against rubberbands and use water filled weights strapped to the body...?

Yes, if we are going to devote these kinds of resources; I think it should be more than a vanity project for a few peop!e.
We need to rebuild roads, railway, bridges, etc. We need to build infrastructure here; not on Mars.
