sexual abuse is abhorrent... as I can personally attest to dealing with my mother in law who was abused by her step father and brother back in the mid 40's...

 I feel this is just another aspect of it...the problem being, school teachers, staff etc are not even remotely trained by anyone of expertise to be in the position of making decisions that affect not only the life of a student, but their families as well...this **** should not be taken lightly, yet it most certainly seems to be as it's seen as a fad...as I've told you before, children are venerable when it comes to influence...which this story is proof of...

Another possible explanation (and that's not even the right word) could be that today's youth are a lot more liberal than previous generations, and a lot more accepting.  I don't recall anyone in my high school claiming to be transgendered, but then, I don't actually even remember very many guys or gals who were openly, out-of-the-closet homosexuals either, but there is no doubt that many of my high school classmates were actually gay, and did come out later in life.  I think the reason they didn't come out earlier was a societal stigma that does not really exist much anymore in that age group.  My point is, how we each view ourselves and how we self-define ourselves may be a deeply hidden secret and there may very well have been males who, deep in their hearts, felt like they were a female trapped in a male body living lives of quiet sadness and desperation for centuries and centuries and they just accepted their fate and stayed closeted.  And who we are attracted TO can also be a complicated mess as well.  I am reminded of the British comedian, Eddie Izzard, who, used to dress up in drag for shows but was not at all homosexual, but rather used to refer to himself as a lesbian trapped in a man's body.  He was always  - and still is - attracted to women, but he FEELS like a woman himself.  Similarly, Amy Schneider, the Jeopardy champ, was born into a man's body, but always felt trapped, had the reassignment surgery, but still married another woman.  I am suggesting that people like that have always been living amongst us.  They simply lived their lives in lonely quiet desperation maybe never even coming to grips with what the actual reason for their sadness and confusion really was.  I can imagine that, if Amy Schneider were in high school today, all of her classmates would know that he wanted to be a she and that the vast majority of those classmates wouldn't worry or care about it.

while I don't agree with your "many" term...but that can be subjective...

sure, history shows us that yes, they've always been around, but statistically, the numbers aren't there...at best, in the lower single digit percentile...

what this story proves is that children, and yes, a 6th grader is still a child, can be manipulated into thinking anything, like the schools pushing "diversity and inclusion" forcing people into acceptance of an ever raising bar of behavior...

 I look no further than the Hitler youth to be reminded of how venerable children can be...
