Story time
The summer of 1974 I was 16 and had a 16 year old girlfriend named Betty, a 1966 Mustang and an 80 hour a week job at a Marina my locally famous grandmother helped me land. Ma Bruce would come with my mother and sell autographed books, and sit in the cafe.
I worked my *** off. I didn’t want to embarrass my family, and I’ve always been a money whore.
I made $100 a week before taxes, which the inflation calculator says is $620 a week today, seven day week, 80 hours a week.
Richard Nixon had some summer program for 16 year old seasonal labor that they could pay $1.25 an hour for 80 hours, and be exempt from minimum wage and overtime. I loved it.
My “day off” was every other Saturday I left at four and did not have to be at work until eleven on Sunday.
My memories of me and Betty that summer are priceless beyond measurement, every other Saturday evening we’d go out but I had to bring her home to Cliqout by midnight. I loved Betty’s father, who told me railroad stories, and her mother was an excellent cook.
My super model beautiful 48 year old mother that summer had met and was dating a multi millionaire who owned a factory in Ohio and a brand new Class A motorhome.
One Saturday night I got home late from Betty’s and my mother let me in as she always did, and she said her boyfriend was sleeping in his motor home out back and to leave the doors unlocked, so he could come in any time he wanted.
It was just breaking daylight in my room when I woke up with his hand on my leg.
Would you like to go for a run with me, he asked?
I said I need to sleep, this is my only morning every two weeks I can sleep in after getting off at four.
He moved his hand higher and said you are just like one of my sons, and lazy.
Did you and your little girlfriend have fun last night?
Behind that mother **** was my loaded Winchester 94 30/30 on a rack. I wasn’t scared as much as calculating how to shoot him,,,,…
When I saw Mama behind him pointing her J C Higgins Model 88 and I screamed
MAMA DON’T SHOOT HIM!
I shoved him aside and grabbed her gun and said you can’t kill that man, Mama give me that gun, and she did.
Funny what you do in that situation.
I looked at him and just said
GET! NOW!
Then I hugged Mama who was crying so hard I thought she might break.
I doubt he ever told that story to anyone.
Mama and I surely kept it quiet.
When I dropped by Betty’s that night after work she was kind of surprised to see me after 11.
I just said I want to see my sweetie, on my way home.
Didn’t cost me a dime to let her know, I’d have died before embarrassing Betty.
