All of us men were 18-22 at least once.

When I attended college in Kansas City from 1976-79 there was a Residence Hall I stayed because I was a thrifty hillbilly and that was the cheapest way to earn a degree.

In the lobby there was this tiny, skinny runt of  boy who was a flyweight wrestling champion.

I’d be over trying to get to know a group of certified Barbie Dolls who attended the Conservatory clustered around the piano better, and I’d see goobers giving the wrestler boy **** for playing his flute and I’d say excuse me, ladies.

I’d walk over to the biggest tormentor the boy had and say, do you mind if I smoke?

And he’d say of course not.

Id take out a cigarette and say I must have left my Zippo someplace do you have a light?

(If he didn’t most of the girls did)

And then I’d say this young man here is my friend.

And I’d appreciate it if you’d quit **** with him about playing his flute.  He’s not bothering anyone.

And then I’d smile, and ask —-

Isn’t there someplace else you can go?

They always found someplace to go.

It helped a lot I was a night attendant and a student patrolman plus back then I weighed 180 pounds and I’d knocked two of those bullies out cold as a block of ice for poking fun at my hillbilly accent.

Nobody wanted to be the third bully.

Boys used to torment Gym Jordan horribly.

Looking back I am so grateful I’ve spent all my 65 years as a typical Scottish sized Christian boy.

By the time I was 15 and got almost all my growth that summer my mother could go buy me suits right off the store mannequins and they’d fit.

When my mother came to visit on Parent’s Weekend that wrestler boy’s mother used to hug my Mama and thank her, for raising up such a good son.
