Hello Cyndi...when I get on this topic I like to fantacize about what POST APOCALYTIC USA would be like.
For anyone else who shares the same interest  in DOOM & GLOOM there is a whole series of books written by G. Michael Hopf that are outstanding.
I'm not much of a reader of novels but I found these books to be hard to put down long enough to give my eyes a rest.

Cyndi...the book series written by G Michael Hopf is best read in the proper order. Hopf has a little bit of Insider Knowledge with his military background and so the chain of events that he put into writing is very imaginative and very believable.
The TV series "THE LAST SHIP" is a good look at a post SHTF USA too.

Well these books are meant for entertainment more so than advice.

Imagine a handful of atomic blasts set off all over the USA and what the aftermath would be like for the survivors. The scenarios that Hopf comes up with are very imaginative. 
There's even character who is a Marine Colonel aboard a Navy Destroyer who commandeers the ship and uses his manpower and firepower  to establish a new colony in the Pacific NW.
Some of his books have a few "sub plots" developing at the same time and once in awhile the sub plots merge.

I want a setting  that's easy to defend and will make bad guys think twice before spending the calories or else risking their lives to pay me a visit. 
I want to be able to see at least a mile in all directions 
I want to be able to say that I live more than a tank full of gas from the nearest large population.
I want land that will feed cattle, horses and support as much wild game as possible.
Having 1/2 the people than what we have right now fighting for  basic survival  resources in 2100 lessens my exposure to unwanted human contact and of course makes the fight for resources much easier to win..

You won't find bands of roving pirates any larger than what a pick up truck or 2 can carry..[that is until the gasoline supply is gone].
The main roads will be extremely dangerous to travel.
If you can't just shelter in place and live off of what you got..too bad.
At about the 2 week mark is when about 1/2 the population will be forced into either begging or else taking by force  whatever they need from neighbors.
