Got to know a few fairly well (as close as work-mates go, I guess).
One thing I discovered long ago was that some people took an immediate dislike to them.
Bear in mind this was Detroit and its environs. Dearborn is next door, iow.
I was curious why the automatic dismissal and/or downright dislike happened.
Since these were all fellow workplace people, I asked a few "friends" what they thought of so-and-so.
Over time I found it seemed to be an arrogance that the Arabs displayed that really annoyed other people.
So, I persisted, albeit gently and almost clandestinely, to find out a little more. I was curious as hell and thought I was missing something. Being young and unworldly, I wanted to know.
Here's what I found: Language and mannerisms.
Simple example is this. A really nice Arab, called himself Abe, would ask for someone to hand him a pencil because it was right next to the person being asked. No biggie, simple request.
But he would say it like this: "You will hand me that pencil." And jut out his chin a little indicating a direction of the item.
To Abe there is no offense being committed. But that was interpreted as a demeaning "order" rather than a polite request.
That is a very simplified version of the point I'm making.
It happened regularly enough that some folks wanted to tell him to go **** himself.
Abe and I even had a chat about it one day. He came up to me wondering why people treated him badly.
Luckily, I had reached this conclusion prior to his chat with me.
He was understanding as hell. He talked about cultures where showing the bottom of your foot to someone in certain circumstances is deemed quite rude. Americans didn't really "get that" either. It goes both ways.
