I was raised in a community with miles and miles of open land. The Golden Hills of California with lots of oak trees and unlimited opportunities to build great tree houses.
Housing projects with "free" building materials were everywhere.
Us kids dragged who knows how much lumber and nails way up into those hills and eventually into every oak tree.
My most important possessions growing up [besides my baseball equipment] was a hammer and a hand saw.
Fast forward to my late 20s and I inherited just enough money to pay cash for a run down house on heavily wooded rural acreage.
I could have opted for the big, fancy McMansion down in Sardinecanistan and the 30 year payments...but thanks to my upbringing I refused to surrender my financial independence and instead made the development of this run down property one of my life's greatest challenges, learning experiences and adventures.
Did it all out of pocket and with a Junior College level carpentry textbook...much of it while I was still in the IBEW Electrical Apprenticeship Program.
It can be done [bypassing the banks]....anyone [who isn't too lazy, or afraid of real work] can do it.
Just look up Dorothy Ainsworth of Backwoods Home Magazine for inspiration. She has submitted several great construction articles. Looks like she even built a house for her piano playing *** of a son.....

One reason (and probably the ONLY reason) I keep coming back here is because I can do all of the above without fear of reprisals.

Think about all the PUBLIC WORKS that could have been funded with the TRILLIONS in wealth siphoned off. I recall @Cannonpointer always saying how if we dam up the Mississippi, the Southwest would be filled with lush greenery (or at least, not as desert-y). Think about all the interesting ideas - building more geothermal plants, finding material to build underwater cities, having an actual cure to cancer - that don't involve shuffling money around.
