I was assigned to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in 1981-82 exclusively in Lebanon. I split my time between serving with the Israeli-Lebanese Mixed Armistice Commission/UN Liaison Office, Beirut which served as the PLO point of contact with the UN Secretary-General, and serving with Observer Group Lebanon in the south working as an observer/crisis mediator in conjunction with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon primarily out of Tyre.
Here is a good book about it by an Army buddy of mine:

I'm aware of our role & participation in Beirut, as part of a Peace Keeping body to help oversee and facilitate the PLO's withdrawal from Lebanon... Our Marines weren't deployed until August of 1982..... They left for about a week in October of 1982, and were summoned to immediately return after the assassination of the interim Lebanese President... Reagan did not authorize our Marines to assume an "aggressive defensive position" until September of 83 ---- at the same time Reagan Authorized the US Navy Battleship New Jersey to launch air and missile strikes in the area surrounding our Marines Barracks which was bombed in October of 83. ...
Again, I am not seeing anything that suggests a live fire attack or engagement in 1981 involving any US Navy personnel, either under or independent from UN Command....

Look. I really don't give a **** what you SEE. I know what I lived through. Lebanon was awash with gunfire on a daily basis. Various factions of Lebanese militia were continually engaging with UNIFIL forces and UNTSO officers were routinely called upon to mediate disengagement. That was my job. I never said I DELIVERED fire to hostile forces, I said I took hostile fire. I was always unarmed. I got shot at... a lot. Everybody with blue berets got shot at. And I just missed getting shot at on several occasions as well. I was the only O-4 in the entire US Navy to take live hostile fire in 1981.

It's entirely true. I took live fire. I never delivered it. Lots of guys took live fire while at UNTSO. As it turns out, there were only five USN officers in UNTSO out of 31 US members... four of them were O-3's...
