The only way to be committed to a mental institution is to show signs of harming yourself or others during a three day evaluation . During this three day evaluation the patient sees a psychiatrist twice .. once while being admitted and a second time during the evaluation. It's not as cut and dry and you may think. He also had an aggravated assault charge against him at one time that ended up getting dropped and never prosecuted, so technically that isn't on his record.
He is barred from owning or possessing firearms based on the mental evaluations alone, but the assault charge would have done it as well if it had been prosecuted. It doesn't mean he can't get his hands on a firearm if he really wanted too... only that the law says he can't legally possess any.
