I agree that the nukes provided shock value, but we were totally annihilating cities and civilians alike before we ever hit Hiroshima.

It was the understanding that a single bomb from a single airplane was suddenly capable of doing what it took 300 airplanes three nights and 1000s of bombs to do that drove the Japanese to the table.

It took two bombs to have them surrender.....some say it was less embarrassing to surrender to a "miracle weapon".....I think it was a strategic surrender in view of Russia being able to join the war, I think they realized speaking Russian would have been in their future.
