That long-term resentment, justified or not, bred factions into existence. And assassinations. And wars.
I'm not trying to appear to side with anyone and certainly not going to shed crocodile tears over this.
It is a regional conflict that has international stake holders unfortunately.

Wrong again.  Jews have been speaking of Zionism for much longer than 1948.  Zionism is the desire to return to their homeland, Israel.  It didn't start in 1948.  What did happen was that all of Jordan and what was then called Palestine, was owned and controlled by the Brits.  They got it after they had to kick Arab *** in WWI.  And, they held onto it through the end of WWII.  It was mostly wilderness and some farm land.   There were also Jews living in Gaza as well as other parts of Israel pre-1948.  The French got Lebanon and I believe parts of Syria.  So, again, to the VICTORS go the SPOILS OF WAR.

After the Germans were defeated, Britain had to do something with the Jews that survived the Nazi extermination machine.  They didn't want them in England.  The US took some, but didn't want to take too many.  So, they had to go somewhere.  England owned Palestine so they encouraged the European Jews to move there.
