The Extra Stout and Draught versions of Guinness are close cousins, but not the same thing. The Extra Stout has a bit sharper bite (and more alcohol) than the Draught, and the Draught uses a nitrogen widget for the bubbles where ES uses good ol' C02.
I like them both, but the store by the house sells these 19.2 Extra Stout cans two for $4.50... and that's a nights worth for me if I'm having them.
I will pick up a 4 pack of the Draught's when they are on sale at the grocery every now and again too.

Darker beers tend to be sweeter and contain more ingredients (and therefore less water). With a stout, you cook the grains longer than you do for a porter or ale. You tend to need more grain because roasting said grain decreases its mass. Second, because you have more dissolvable matter (roasted grain and some hops).. you need more yeast which leads to higher alcohol and then more calories. They are not as refreshing and because of the increased sugar.. are more filling than a lager.

Been there and done that.. It is worth it. Bushmills and Jameson have tasting rooms fairly close so not a bad night.

Guinness is more of a spectacle. 3 or 4 floors of various displays and such about the history of Guinness. Jameson and bushmills are fairly small. It took awhile for my liver to recover from that night.

I didn't bother - probably should have, since I did some pretty lame **** along with some pretty cool ****. If you're into hating the brits, visit the maritime museum at Cove, just outside Cork. It preserves SOME of the history of the brits' cruelty to the hobbits. Drive the ring of kerry. Kiss that **** blarney stone. Pack a lunch and spend an entire afternoon at blarney castle, just north of Cork. By the way, Cork has a fountain in the middle of town with 50 mute swans living there. **** grandeur. Those birds are bloody well gorgeous.
I do have a nice tale. 4 of us debarked from a rental car at our b&b, stowed our gear and met in the street to find a pub and drink. We walked down the lane and encountered a pedestrian (almost no one in ireland used cars in the late 90s). We axed him where a pub was, and without hesitation, he responded, "It's a pub that you're lookin' fer, is it? And what'll ye be drinkin?"
I thought this inquiry rather rude, but I didn't show it. "Guinness," I responded
"Ah! Guinness! Okay, for Guinness you'll be taking the next..." and he directed us to the best pub FOR GUINNESS.
I remember thinking, oh mother **** these irish are some committed tipplers. These *** know which pub has the cleanest lines on their Guinness tap.

prior to getting to dublin.. i thought people were yanking my chain about how much the Irish drank. Yeah.. no they were correct. 8 am on a monday resembled 10 pm on a friday night in Reno.

Clean tap lines are crucial.
