There were Chains back in the day the family would go to that we enjoyed.... A&W Restaurants ---- Shakey's PIzza --- Sambos --- Howard Johnsons -- Beefsteak Charlies.. Even our local Woolworths had a Lunch Counter, they made great Grilled Cheese sandwiches & Shakes..
Woolworth's- You could order phosphate cokes or cherry cokes there!

A kid I went to Highschool with in CT, when we graduated in 1980, instead of going to college his folks bought him a small Subway Franchise..... I don't recall what the startup cost was, though I imagine it wasn't much... Not a Kmart I think but things sure changed over the years.. I used to eat at the Kmart cafe with my Granny when I visited in the Summers and a grilled cheese, chips and a drink was like 75¢.
