You call me a fruitcake, yet you condone lipstick on a pig...it's either fact or fiction...is "a fictional story set in a period timepiece" too boring, long or not conducive to rolling off your tongue?Cannonpointer » 21 Nov 2023, 11:42 pm » wrote: ↑ Yeah yeah, fruitcake. That "contradiction in terms" is an enormous literary and film genre which likely has educated more Americans about history than any academic setting. Have you never read Michener, FFS? If not, you've missed a lot.

Here's a promo for an ambitious, eponymously titled mini-series from the 70s that is based on esteemed historian James K. Michener's book. It spans a couple of hundred years. The primary characters did not exist. They are fictional. But many historical figures DO play a part - well, actors PORTRAYING them do.
Watching the mini series is the equivalent of taking a 3 or 4 credit survey course in American history. "In jest (fiction)," said Shakespeare, "much truth is let."
I can explain it to you - I cannot make you understand it. The education is only available to people smart enough to comprehend the fictional protagonists are fictional, but the historical backdrop is historical - hence the designation, "historical fiction."
I can tell you that most of the history I know is broad-sweeping survey history from reading historical fiction. Oh, I have taken a number of college classes, and learned a good deal. But much of what one learns in college classes is test-fodder. What one gains from historical fiction is context and a broad view of human geography, politics and struggle. AGAIN, in jest much truth is let.
And just for the record? Aesop's Fables and Ulysses and the Iliad - fiction all - are ACTUALLY intended for elucidation and instruction. Google, "The hero's journey," puer.
