he framers understood that humans are inclined to look more favorably upon those who are responsible for their wealth. In private affairs, warmth toward someone who has given a gift, or with whom one has a good business relationship, is a positive emotion that enables human connection. But in public affairs, that sometimes-unconscious influence can be insidious. The framers had also seen how George III used his power to create a side employment relationship with parliamentarians he wanted to influence.----------------------

https://www.theusconstitution.org/litig ... ts-clause/

The Foreign Emoluments Clause of the Constitution requires that all federal officials, including the President, seek and obtain the affirmative consent of Congress before accepting any benefits from foreign states. Our nation’s Founders concluded that this requirement was the only way to prevent undue foreign influence on American officials and to ensure that those officials act in the national interest, not their own financial self-interest. Because President Trump accepted numerous financial benefits from foreign governments through his business empire without first obtaining the consent of Congress, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and approximately 200 other Members of Congress asked the federal courts to compel the President to comply with the Constitution.Trump’s failure to comply with the Constitution matters. The Founders included the Foreign Emoluments Clause in the Constitution because they recognized that payments and gifts to U.S. officials by foreign governments could compromise the judgment of those officials and undermine their loyalty to the United States, thereby harming the American people. But as long as Congress were required to approve such benefits in advance, the risk of foreign corruption would be reduced.

What is the emoluments clause?Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution reads, “No person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince or foreign state.”“Emolument” is a fancy word that means compensation, profit or benefit.

Shortly after speaking to Turkey’s authoritarian president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, Trump endorsed “a Turkish military operation that would sweep away American-backed Kurdish forces near the border in Syria.” In defiance of the will of the Pentagon, State Department, and both houses of Congress, the president agreed to suddenly withdraw U.S. troops from northeast Syria, leaving our nation’s Kurdish allies defenseless against an invading army that considers them “terrorists” on the basis of little more than their ethnicity.-----------------------------------------

Republicans Are Actually Furious Over Trump Abandoning Kurds in SyriaImage
LUKE DARBY
October 7, 2019 at 10:45 AMLate Sunday night, the Trump White House unceremoniously dropped a shocking foreign policy announcement: the United States would now endorse a Turkish military operation in northern Syria that's likely to wipe out previously American-backed Kurdish forces in the region. The New York Times reports that Turkey has long considered the Kurds terrorists, but the U.S. has armed and relied on Kurdish fighters and the Syrian Democratic Forces in fighting the Islamic State. In a statement, the White House said, "Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria. The United States Armed Forces will not support or be involved in the operation, and United States forces, having defeated the ISIS territorial 'Caliphate,' will no longer be in the immediate area."Trump reportedly has numerous business interests tied up in Turkey, including a Trump Tower in Istanbul. According to Newsweek, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has used the two conjoined buildings to exert pressure on Trump before. Since Trump doesn't own the project, but rather leases his name to be used on it for branding, Erdoğan called to have the name Trump scrubbed from it after Trump proposed banning Muslims from entering the U.S. He reversed himself after Trump expressed support for Erdoğan's campaign of mass arrests after a failed coup attempt in Turkey. In a 2015 interview, Trump said of Turkey, "I have a little conflict of interest, because I have a major, major building in Istanbul,” Trump said. “It’s called Trump Towers. Two towers, instead of one. Not the usual one, it’s two.
