My sister and her buddy were telling me today that trees communicate with each other through mushrooms that connect them, and that they will even provide each other with nutrition in a pinch. When a tree is attacked, it will help others fend off the attack by communicating with them through the mushroom.

I do not know about mushrooms, that's the first I've ever heard of this.  But, I would ask what basis your sister and her buddy have for saying this?  Still, I think a better example of what you are discussing would be the Aspen.  Aspens have vast and extensive root systems, and they grow in large colonies. Rarely is there such a thing as a single Aspen tree.  While the things that look like individual trees have a lifespan roughly equivalent to humans,  the root system can live for thousands of years.  Surely, these Aspens communicate through their interconnected root systems.  Something we know little about.

Yes, the largest creature on earth is believed to be a 106 acre (.165 miles square) aspen "forest" of many thousands of trees that are actually all one tree. The organism is named "Pando," which is Latin for "spread."

But that is quite dubious. Many insist this two thousand year old mushroom - which covers 2200 acres (about 3.5 square miles) is larger.

Yes, plants are freaking weird.  Do they communicate?  Maybe we are too worried about AI and should be more worried about PI - - Plant Intelligence.

There is zero question they communicate. There's a ton of science on that.

Hell, just raising a garden will prove it to even a casual observer. 

This summer I had zucchini, crooked neck, and bell pepper growing in proximity. I snipped ONE LEAF from a healthy crooked neck squash plant, to open some sunlight for the bell pepper. Within half an hour, both the crooked neck and the zucchini - both of which had been standing proud and healthy and glorious, eating sunlight - slumped like beaten dogs for the entire afternoon. 

They were fine the next day - back to standing proud. But when one came under perceived assault, both were clearly devastated.
