No longwinded explanations are needed here.  Big banks want to eliminate cash.  They want you using credit because they get a percentage.

Depends on the card. Not all percentages are the same. Point is that they get a percentage.

I always understood it to be a processing fee per transaction that was based on the amount of said transaction... charged back to the merchant.

At one time the lower transactions were a flat fee, which is why some merchants had a "minimum" transaction amount if you were using a card because the transaction fee would end up costing the merchant more than they were making off the sale of it was too small.

It's basically another tax on the businesses.

Some merchants do have a five dollar minimum, but that is violating their contract.  I would not, of course, ever turn them in.

None of this, so far, is a tax.  At least in the sense of government tax.  Businesses voluntarily enter into a contract.

The rub is if a country becomes "cashless."  Then, the merchant has no choice.

The OP is correct, in my opinion. The banks don't like cash. Banks can't take a percentage of cash. They are big enough to pull this off.

Just look at how the threshold for SARs (suspicious activity reports) has lowered.  It was 10k not too long ago.  Last I checked it was 6k.  It's probably lower now.

A lot of businesses have surcharges, which they like to call "convenience" fees.  Gas stations and restaurants are two that immediately come to mind.

The merchant’s bank pays my bank when I use a credit card.

My bank makes money off of me via interest if I don’t pay the balance in full.

A percent of a penny is still a piece.

That's all that matters in the end.

But you are borrowing money to make a purchase that you couldn't afford at the time. Should that service be free?

****, one of the merchants I frequent because they sell cool **** like Sorghum that is hard to find? They charge a dollar for cards, and they have a 20 dollar minimum purchase to let ya use it. More power to 'em, I say. Don't like it, don't shop there. Free country.

Me, I go to the bank window regularly for cash, always getting at least 15 ones, 8 fives and a couple of tens, for casual purchases about town. I support small local businesses as much as I can. I not only pay in cash, but I make sure not to hurt small business people's registers by purchasing small items with big bills.
