The one that did this?
I'd rather listen to the deep, rich tones of the clarinet the way he could play it.Cannonpointer » 25 Dec 2023, 6:01 pm » wrote: ↑ That take down had BEST not be aimed at the inimitable Artie Shaw!![]()

I liked the generation that dressed like gentlemen. The Tijuana Brass was of a later time, when people just showed up wearing what they wanted. I like some showmanship with my show - that's just me.GHETTOBLASTER » 25 Dec 2023, 6:17 pm » wrote: ↑ I'd rather listen to the deep, rich tones of the clarinet the way he could play it.
By the same token a brass instrument called the Baritone has a deep rich mellow tone and it plays just like a trumpet and so I think it sounds much nicer overall.

I think that lead trumpeter of Shaw's is Bernie Glow. I really like that guy.GHETTOBLASTER » 25 Dec 2023, 6:17 pm » wrote: ↑ I'd rather listen to the deep, rich tones of the clarinet the way he could play it.

Agreed as horns are generally used for setting tempo and/or adding exhilarating highlights...GHETTOBLASTER » 25 Dec 2023, 5:55 pm » wrote: ↑ For me to just sit and listen to a trumpet..a little bit of that goes a long way.
Too often the trumpeteer / band leader is more interested in "showing off" how extreme he can make that instrument sound than he is simply making it sound pretty.
For this reason I think it's hard to beat Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

The phrase you needed and had no access to was "colorful anachronisms."
Now, anachronism is five syllables - to you, a "big" word.

Once I was handed a baritone to play the only use I had for my trumpet was to practice the key strokes at home.Cannonpointer » 25 Dec 2023, 6:28 pm » wrote: ↑ I think that lead trumpeter of Shaw's is Bernie Glow. I really like that guy.
That baritone horn rocks! It's as noir as anything I've ever heard.
