I remember living in Brooklyn and the Bronx during the age of the boom box and ghettoblaster.  (EVERYONE Called it that).  The birth of Rap.  Before that many young black men had what they called a rhyme, or a rap.  They would say as they walked the street.  Then someone got smart, put it to music and there ya go.  I remember Rappers Delight and the Sugar Hill Gang.

Making me feel old again. I did not grow up in Brooklyn but remember that term, ghettoblaster. It makes sense that it came from what you describe. It takes money to buy instruments and time/money to learn how to play them.

To begin.. I grew up in the trailer park so I saw quite a bit of what you mention here. The males would try to increase their appeal by emulating the self assured, confident, gangster schtick that they would see in movies and music. Most of it was purely attention seeking. However, this is what happens in the lower income neighborhoods.. white or black. There is no bravado, confidence, or machismo displayed by blasting The Cure, Sonic Youth, or Husker Du. Also, like it or not.. it is easier to dance to Hip Hop/Pop/Electronica than most rock.

MTV is a business and they responded to the market. They could quantify how many times a video was watched and well.. hip/hop, rap, and pop views exceeded alternative rock and heavy metal.
