The same prejudices and ignorance would exist in the complete absence of religion.. hence religion is just another layer to the proverbial onion.

Simple. Don't go to church, temple, mosque, or any other house of worship.
I would also argue that with some exceptions religion is not necessarily the root cause of a conflict but used to fire up the people for grand theft of another countries resources.
