Since the Soviet Union transformed itself from a backward, predominantly peasant society to an industrial powerhouse in fewer than fifty years, including its victory over the U.S. vis-a-vis the space race, I don't know that capitalist countries' living standards grew "at a much faster pace."     One could argue that certain aspects of capitalist societies' living standards outpaced those of the Soviet Union. But, concerning rates of infant mortality, neonatal death, education, employment, etc., all of which began to improve almost immediately, the pace of improvement relative to the USSR's standard of living was, in many ways, one of the fastest in human history. To consider that it was carried out against the backdrop of the extreme poverty left by Czarist Russia, a civil war, Stalin's revisionism, a world war, three significant famines, and hostile capitalist powers makes it even more remarkable.

I see. So, those above and drastic improvements concerning infant mortality, neonatal death, literacy, employment, etc., were "nothing to write home about." All right. But maybe, like virtually all anti-communists, LowIQTrash can't bring themself to acknowledge the apparent accomplishments of socialism. It's associated with the fact that anti-communists nearly always ignore the devastating effects of the U.S. embargo against Cuba when noting and criticizing the precarity of Cuban society. Indeed, it seems as if a 10.0 earthquake were to strike Cuba, anti-communists would blame socialism for the damage rather than the earthquake. 

As for Reactionaries and liberals bringing up the number of deaths caused by the Great Leap Forward, yes, they will do that, and often for a good reason. After all, excesses were carried out under the Great Leap Forward and within all epochs of the Chinese Revolution. But, as its continuing genocide of First Nation peoples demonstrates as a single example, the U.S. has no room in which to criticize others concerning excesses.

I don't know what an attempt to require the U.S. to trade with and aid Cuba and Venezuela would look like; however, it would suffice if the U.S. would only allow other states to deal with socialist Cuba and capitalist Venezuela. That would be more than enough for Cuba to modernize its infrastructure and provide even more improvements for its people. But the U.S. won't allow for that because the enormous social gains already achieved by the Cuban Revolution serve as a threat of a good example that the U.S. cannot help but thwart. 

And since Zeets2 is opposed to the U.S. trading with despotic regimes, Zeets2 needs to call for U.S. embargos against Saudi Arabia, Israel, and many other authoritarian governments the U.S. trades with.

My comparison wouldn't be ironic even (if) socialism were manifested in those cities, which it is not. Beyond the scope of the capitalist juggernaut that envelopes the globe, what occurs in the U.S. and Cuba are separate and distinct from one another. The ever-decaying conditions within cities like Detroit are wholly the result of the deindustrialization that has come about in the wake of many capitalists transferring their industrial capacity overseas. The devastating socioeconomic effects of deindustrialization and capitalism are felt by Democratic and Republican mayors, who are mainly powerless to counter those pathologies. 

Per the assertion that I support Democratic mayors, I haven't voted in favor of a Democratic politician since 1984, for like their Republican "counterparts," they are pro-capitalist politicians, while I am a Marxist, specifically a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist. Indeed, Zeets2 and all other pro-capitalists share more in common with Democratic politicians than I do.

The Labor Department then initiated its Own Your Own Home program, later led by Herbert Hoover, which provided liquidity for banks toward the expansion of home loans. In 1933, the New Deal's "Home Owners' Loan Corporation was launched, which granted home loans to workers, making homeownership far more accessible and committing workers psychologically to capitalism. 

In response to Sputnik and the education gap between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., the U.S. enacted 1958's National Defense Education Act, which made low-interest student loans, augmenting higher education. While noting the program's success, the late U.S. Senator Stewart McClure said, "I think if there was one thing I did during my work on the hill, it was to focus attention on the opportunity that Sputnik gave all of us who had been struggling for decades to establish a federal program of monetary aid to public education." 

But with the dissolution of the U.S.S.R. and, therefore, the elimination of a countervailing system, the U.S. capitalist state began to claw back New Deal programs and other social reforms. Capitalism is, again, free to be as mean as it needs to be.
