I was raised in CT, and also lived a few years in Minnesota.... That morning Bus stop in Rochester in Jan / Feb was brutal... You learned quick to wear a hat that would pull down over your ears, because of they were exposed you were a target for the dreaded Ear-Flick.. Man that would sting, especially in about 15 degrees...

It all plays in building some character at a young age.

These days the school bus makes alot more stops and parents buy brand new cars for their 15 1/2 year old kids.

..and NORMAL KIDS considered it fun and a little bit of an adventure too.
Once the "Nintendo Baby Generation" came about  and Women's LIb was in high gear is  when America's children began spending most of their lives indoors  all "safe and sound"....

In the summer time. I don't see kids on bikes. No one is around.
My gawd- we used to all get together and ride our bikes around town.. like a bunch of little bandits. There was safety in numbers.
I remember hurting my eye. Had a patch. The other kids stuck me in a wagon.. and carted my arss around the neighborhood.

in the town of 2-3k where I delivered mail, the grade school had a looped entrance...parents were complaining about the amount of time they had to wait in line to drop lil jimmy and sally off...it was upwards of 20 minutes and they "were arriving late for work"... Image  WTF?

BTW, the busses dropped off the kiddies who actually rode the bus on the other side of the building...

The [[[JWO]]] wanted all American Mothers from that time forward to raise their boys  like little girls.
They used their mass media monopoly to instill fear into their minds and to "normalize" the notion that allowing your kids to play outdoors was child abuse.
It's all part of their multi-pronged approach to satisfying their population control agenda.
