So why do white athletes exhibit the mannerisms of high profile black athletes? It exhibits confidence and bravado. What do those get you? The ladies and the respect of your fellow male athletes. Nobody is itching to be the quiet, cerebral, introverted, introspective, and therefore overlooked player. If you have ever grew up poor, you notice how folks are more flamboyant and outwardly expressive. Its their way of getting attention in the absence of having income, resources, toys, etc in which to take pride in. In my neighborhood, they did this by wearing clothing that made them stand out. Second, they spent their money (not wisely) on making their vehicle more noticeable.

Read the biographies and interviews of most white rock stars from the 70's to now.. and you will see the same names mentioned as being highly influential to them.. Little Richard, Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Chuck Berry, and George Clinton.

What about Roger Whitaker? The man was an innovative genius. He took nightclubbing to a whole new level.

Yes, I know not everyone is as perfect as you. That being said.. was raised poor in an incredibly white demographic. They acted the same way as poor blacks do. Lots of showing off and pretending to not be as poor/idiotic/out of luck as they are. The classic case is putting the fancy rims on the junker car. Or even worse.. the hydraulics.

Well, I was raised extremely wealthy and poor white trash - intermittently. 

The old man worked the oil patch. When we went overseas, we were virtually indistinguishable from the jet-setters (back when that phrase had a meaning). I got an allowance - because my mom was loaded. She had pesos galore!

When we came back stateside, we owned and abided in a 974 square foot, 3 bed, 1 bath frame house. We bought used cars, on time. 

We were poor, ***-rich; poor, ***-rich. I know whereof I speak - and I never claimed to be perfect. I just know that it is more correct to say that actions beget circumstances than it is to say circumstances beget actions. Neither is PERFECTLY true - but one is much truer. 

Now, we BOTH know a kid born on this side of the tracks has a better chance than a kid born on that side. I'm not one to blame the victim. But neither am I one to coddle a ***. Your bad luck gets you my sympathy and nothing else, unless we are blood related.

From my experiences.. poverty is mostly a function of not being to forego satisfaction or pleasure. You have the money now.. so lets spend it. You have the something (money, patience, sex appeal, etc.) and so why wait to use it? problem is that nothing lasts forever and what do you have left tomorrow after using all of your resources up? There is some bad luck. Dirt poor trailer trash family and I had a ruptured appendix. No insurance.. heck did not even know what it was prior to almost dying. Credit was destroyed before I was out of high school. $42K in medical bills and my job at the time.. dishwasher at a pancake house. 

Also, we like sure things. Going to college and possibly getting a good job.. not a sure thing. Working for the uncle or someone connected to the uncle doing stucoo.. that is more of a sure thing. All you have to do is maintain a body temp of 98.6 degrees and be willing to have no life may to November. Now, what is the drawback to working stucco. Likely back problems and no marketable skills once you are injured or tired of it.

I am from similar circumstances, and NOW you are being more - shall we say... comprehensive in your analysis?

Yes, people do stupid **** because they are poor. But they are also poor because they do stupid ****. And in this chicken/egg dilemma, my default is to put the accountability on the living organism, as opposed to something as ephemeral and mutable as his/her circumstances. Smart actions lead out of poverty as surely (if NOT as quickly) as stupid actions lead into it.

Even after leaving the home, I stayed poor until age 28. Spent many hours thinking about how/why this kept persisting. I did not smoke 3 packs per day like mom and dad both did. I did not drink much (maybe 3 or 4 beers per year). So why was I struggling along paycheck to paycheck just like they did. Best decision that I ever made was to live with 200 yards of the job.. no need for a car that could break down. No car insurance, no tickets. nada

The problem is that for most.. they revert back to their old ways at the first struggle. They saved money in april and may but damn.. something in June messed them up so best go back to the old ways which you know. One sickness, one broken down vehicle, one frozen pipe.. their house of cards comes down.

Any man who avoids a vehicle is paying himself a minimum of 6k after-tax per year - pennies from heaven. Smart move, that. The kind of move that leads OUT of poverty.

I hated that **** job.. unloader at Wal-Mart. Far too many chiefs and not enough indians if you get what I am saying. However, I discovered that 2 days after payday I was not broke. 

in closing, if there is one thing that I hope to impart on my two kids, it is being determined and persistent. Do not let things get in your way. Problems arise and you may not have a clue what to do.. but you try. If you **** it up.. then try again. Had a washing machine go out of commission once.. that was worthy of a sitcom. I would have done better by throwing it out the window but I kept going.  Nose to the grindstone, **** everything else, and get 'er done. If you let distractions lead you astray.. you never get back on the path. After this terrible job, I put this same mindset into finishing undergrad and then the Phd.
