He finds the family in the closet.  The woman shoots the guy in the arm and the family lives.

The man is a convicted felon who is also out on bond for a gun charge.

In the world of the anti gunnuters left the women and three children are dead because the woman would not have had the firearm.
In the minds of **** heads like BV the woman should be arrested for discharging a firearm that  exposed her kids to the toxic effects of gun powder smoke, permanent eye injury from the blinding muzzle flash, and for the "reckless endangerment of her next door neighbors with errant bullets that could have penetrated her walls and killed the people in the house next door.
In BV's mind she should also serve time for   killing an  attacker who suffers from a previously diagnosed mental condition that renders him unable to control his mood swings...

No they have not had 13 mass murders since Port Aurthur. Let's break down your claim and the link you provide for your support:
  • Port Aurthur resulted in 35 deaths - this can be categorized as a "mass murder", where someone without any connection to the victims just wanted to go on a killing spree
  • There have only been 6 instances in Australia since 1996 involving someone killing more than 5 people. Two of the largest incidences were arson attacks. A couple of others were vehicle attacks and stabbing attacks.
  • There has not been anything even close to the Port Arthur attack since Australia enacted confiscatory gun bans.
So, Australia's gun ban worked - it stopped mass murders anything similar to Port Arthur.

So Australia bought back around 650,000 semi automatic firearms and implemented laws making it much harder to buy the others.  We have an estimated 400,000 million (all guns) in circulation.  I don't how many are semi automatic.  That is a lot of money.  As far as the regulations we would probably have to pass a constitutional amendment to do.  At this point in our history that will not happen.

So did their ban work?  Possibly.

Well you brought up Australia's ban, and I pointed out that the ban actually did work to stop mass shootings. If you want to jump over to the United States, a ban of semi-autos would look more like this:
  • Require that all semi-autos be registered
  • Outlaw magazines over 5 rounds
  • Prohibit the manufacture, sale or transfer of Semi-autos.  When someone dies, the semi-auto would have to be destroyed (it's not confiscation if you never owned it)
In 30 years, most semi-auto guns would be destroyed.  Then, the government could afford to confiscate and pay for the rest to be destroyed.

People living with handgun owners died by homicide at twice the rate of their neighbors in gun-free homes. That difference was driven largely by homicides at home, which were three times more common among people living with handgun owners.
We detected much larger differences for particular types of homicide. Most notably, people living with handgun owners were seven times more likely to be shot by their spouse or intimate partner. In many of these cases, instead of being protective, the household gun probably operated as the instrument of death.

Here's the reality

"Around 4.5 million women in the United States have been threatened with a gun, and nearly 1 million women have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner.  Over half of all intimate partner homicides are committed with guns. Indeed, a woman is five times more likely to be murdered when her abuser has access to a gun"
