WashingtonCNN — Republicans savaged President Donald Trump Wednesday for allowing Turkey to attack US allies in Syria as the President offered varying reasons for giving Turkey the green light, including the fact that Kurds did not fight alongside the US in World War II.Turkey launched its military operation to flush Kurds allied with the US out of northeastern Syria sparking outrage in Congress, creating rare bipartisan unity about the risks to the Kurds, US national security interests, regional stability and the fight against ISIS.Trump apparently gave Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the go-ahead on Sunday to proceed with his long-planned move against Kurdish fighters who make up part of the Syrian Defense Forces and who lost thousands of men fighting with the US against ISIS.Turkey begins military offensive in Syria, days after Trump announced pullback of US troopsAs Turkish planes pounded Kurdish positions from the air and with artillery, CNN reporters on the ground in Syria reported smoke billowing from several large explosions as desperate civilians – women, children and men – fled the area on foot, some pushing others in wheelchairs, many crammed into the back of pickup trucks. With humanitarian groups reporting the bombardment could displace as many as 300,000 people, Erdogan’s top adviser told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour that Trump knew in advance about the scope of the Turkish attack.“President Trump and President Erdogan have reached an understanding over precisely what this operation is,” Gulnur Aybet said from Ankara on Wednesday. “He knows what the scope of this operation is.”The news trickling out of Syria fed increasing Republican anger, as lawmakers, former officials and analysts reacted throughout the day, and the US military stayed conspicuously silent.

The United States has fostered a relationship with the Kurds in Iraq through humanitarian and military assistance under a strong partnership built on a shared interest in containing the security dilemma in the region. The Kurdish government and its standing military, the Peshmerga, defeated ISIS in 2017 with the support of the US-led coalition. The Department of Defense (DOD) announced four more years of support for the Peshmerga for anti-ISIS operations, demonstrating its commitment to its Kurdish partners and recognizing the dedication of the Kurds to liberate more than “50,000 square kilometers from ISIS control, including critical infrastructure and population centers in Iraq's Kurdistan Region.” The Kurdish Region of Iraq (KRI) was especially impacted by ISIS terror, since the front lines of the territorial fight were only 55 miles away from its two large cities of Mosul and Erbil.

OCTOBER 9, 2019
by
Patrice TaddonioThe White House announced Sunday that U.S. troops would no longer have a presence in northern Syria, just days before neighboring Turkey would begin a “long-planned” offensive there against Kurdish fighters, who helped the U.S.-led coalition take the area from ISIS.Critics quickly characterized the decision as an abandonment of the Kurdish soldiers who have for years been considered some of America’s best fighters against ISIS both in Syria and Iraq. Even some of President Trump’s staunchest Republican defenders voiced fears, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying a quick withdrawal from Syria “would increase the risk that ISIS and other terrorist groups regroup,” and Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeting, “Pray for our Kurdish allies who have been shamelessly abandoned by the Trump Administration. This move ensures the reemergence of ISIS.”The announcement came after a phone call between Trump and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Facing harsh criticism on Wednesday as the Turkish offensive in Syria was under way, President Trump said that the U.S. “does not endorse this attack and has made it clear to Turkey that this operation is a bad idea.”

The REALLY SAD thing is... Trump, and the Republican speaking out on the subject are EXACTLY RIGHT !!  Iran was CONTROLLED until Joe Biden RELEASED all the financial constraints on Iran... AND THAT is what got ALL of this in motion... JUST LIKE Bidens ENDING of Trumps border policy got illegal ingratiation OUT of CONTROL... and JUST LIKE his ending of Trump imposed Afghanistan withdrawal criteria got HUNDREDS of American servicemen, and American civilian help, KILLED when BIDEN FINALLY decided to withdraw !

Impossible.  Kurds were located in a small area of Syria.  ISIS was all over 80% of Syria.

ISIS was defeated by Russia.  Sorry sir, your contention is impossible.

These claims of victory raise at least two important questions: First, to what extent has ISIS been defeated and, second, which country, the United States or Russia, deserves credit for contributing the most to this cause? The short answer would be this: The U.S.-led coalition did far more to clear ISIS out of Iraq and Syria than Russia and its allies; however, even though the terror group no longer controls significant territory in these countries, its fighters continue to carry out deadly attacks there, waging what the Institute for the Study of War recently called “a capable insurgency” with “a global finance network,” showing that any purported victory over ISIS—whether claimed by Washington or Moscow—is extremely “fragile.”1

Sorry, Institute for the Study of War is Neocon think tank that is nothing but WASH DC propaganda.

You said the KURDS defeated ISIS.  Thats IMPOSSIBLE.  They were located on less than 10% of Syrian land.

The US hoped ISIS would take out Assad.  The US was barely fighting ISIS.

Russia did all the heavy lifting.  PERIOD.  Got it?

Turkey has a problem with Kurds on its border. The Kurds living inside of Turkey together with Kurds living outside of its border have engaged in an armed conflict insurrection within the borders of Turkey.  This separatist group of Kurds have either demanded secession from Turkey (taking Turkish land) to create an independent Kurdistan.  From Turkey's perspective they are terrorists.  And, a good President or Prime Minister will eradicate all terrorist activities within its border, and take out their ability to attack your border, even if this means "cleansing" terrorists from a swath of land outside of your borders.

"Future historians will ask how a global superpower like the United States seemed so unprepared for Afghanistan’s unraveling. Here’s what they should know: Almost everyone who paid any attention to Afghanistan saw it coming—everyone, that is, except Biden and his insular circle of advisors."After taking office, Biden undertook a superficial review of our Afghanistan policy—one that totally ignored the advice of his top military advisor and his commanders on the ground. On April 14, 2021, he reversed the Trump administration’s conditions-based drawdown policy and announced that all U.S. forces would be withdrawn from Afghanistan by Sept. 11 of that year, whether or not the Taliban had met its commitments under the 2020 agreement."

The enemy today is the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The terror group burst from the ungoverned areas of Syria in 2014 and overwhelmed forces arrayed against it. The Department of Defense first signed an MOU with the Kurdistan Regional Government in 2016, when ISIS held large swaths of territory across Iraq, to clearly demonstrate DOD's commitment to the peshmerga as they and other Iraqi security forces worked with the global coalition to liberate millions of Iraqis from ISIS terror.  "Since 2014, the U.S.-led coalition has supported Iraq's fight against ISIS," Wallander said. "Together, we liberated more than 50,000 square kilometers from ISIS control, including critical infrastructure and population centers in Iraq's Kurdistan region, freed more than 4.5 million Iraqis from ISIS terrorism, and provided our Iraqi-Kurdish partners with recovery and stabilization support." ISIS no longer holds territory, but it continues as a shadowy terror group to target the citizens of Iraq and populations across the broader region. "The United States remains committed to supporting the Iraqi Security Forces, including the Kurdish peshmerga, to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS," she said.
