I do not believe that is true. You are referring to indentured servants. The nigra was property from day one.

Before 1640 it is my understanding that  the African slaves were treated like indentured Royal Subjects were under British common law.

It's been many years since I took "Cultural Anthropology 101"....but this is where I first  heard that  the earliest freed slaves were granted x amount of acres to call their own.

It seems the history is a bit murky in this area for sure. You might be correct. There WAS a case in 1641 with a nigra named John Punch. He was sentenced by a court to servitude for life. However, that was a punishment for R-U-N-N-O-F-T. The case your meme alludes to is a different matter.
