Texas Rangers used to apprehend mestizos who illegally crossed the Rio Grande into Texas, and make great examples of those they caught.
The Rangers would summarily execute the illegals and toss them into the Rio Grande.
However, the bodies had to be "prepped" before tossing them into the river, for gases released into the digestive tract as a result of decomposition will often cause a body to float to the surface.
The Rangers would, accordingly, slit the bellies and intestines of the mestizos before tossing them into the river, which prevented the mestizos from floating to the surface.
