The two witnesses weren't testifying to the rape. They were testifying to having been told of it by Carroll at the time it occurred.

They only testified to what they knew, specifically that Carroll told them about the incident when it occurred. That was the ONLY purpose of their appearance. Not the details, just the fact that she told them at the time.
