Of course, then they'd also have to pay the highest gas prices in the country, the nation's highest housing costs, the highest food costs in the country, deal with the highest number of homeless in the US, you'd pay the highest tax rates in the country, experience the worst drought in the US, breathe the highest amount of greenhouse gas pollution in the country, the highest poverty rate in the US, ranks last in the quality of life concerns, has the highest mortgage debt in the country, and is one of the top 5 dirtiest states in the country?

There are cheap plots of land elsewhere in the world (like rural Japan - a house costs less than $100K USD) and so forth.
Anyone who isn’t rich (10M+ NW) or wealthy ($35M+ NW) and wants to buy a cheaply built, deficient in many ways house in 2024 - for non investment purposes - while paying ever rising property taxes (“but my housing equity!” - **** idiots) is probably missing a few parts of his or her brain.

Might be a good idea to investigate other parts of the world…like SE Europe? I just don’t like harsh winters. S America is a bit of a gamble.

I did consider Texas but concluded it would’ve been an excellent choice 2 decades ago (about the time you settled there)…now overrun with illegals and Californians. If you live in a less densely populated area it isn’t as much of an issue but yea…
