Definitely IQ. You definitely still have to be smart enough to guide the sail through the rough waters. However, an initial wind needs to come to get it started. We have no control over receiving the wind. If we get it, then it's up to us to navigate. Without the wind, it doesn't matter how smart you are.

I had met an elderly woman- she was 83. Gawds did I have a ball with her- good friend
She owned a bunch of casinos out in CA. outta my poor league-

she got sick and the medicine men came- go to a doctor. lol sadly i think she may be gone

Lol. I doubt that. You said you knew him from school. He had to learn to read/write and do some math somewhere. It's unlikely he could become successful with being illiterate and not even knowing basic math. Taxpayers covered that.

But as taxPAYERS, we PAID for that elementary education, just as our taxes paid for the roads we drive on, the water we use, and the sanitary/sewer system we use, and more than likely we paid far more in the taxes that were used to pay for those things than the typical worker who never became rich.

I paid for my own college education because my parents couldn't afford it, so I worked a second job while going to college part time while I was getting my first business off the ground.  That included weekends and nights, and I don't believe I ever worked less than 60 hours a week PLUS the 6 credits I was carrying, which was all I could afford for several semesters.  It can be done if you want it badly enough, and within 6 years of starting my first business I was turning over a million dollars profit per year.  And that became the foundation for 4 other businesses I put together over the next 30 years.  I never found it important enough to work even harder to become a Bezo's-type billionaire, and I certainly had some bad years where I lost money, but I found it sufficient to become quite comfortable with the wealth I've attained throughout my life.  But that's not to say it didn't come with costs to my health either, and now at the age of 70 I've had to live with 3 hip replacements, a spinal fusion, double hernia surgery, arthritis and severe bursitis I suffer with daily, 3 hip dislocations, kidney surgery and a pacemaker, all mostly due to having such a heavy workload for over 25 years.

That's why I get so pissed off when I hear liberals whining about how hard they have it today because they're expected to pay back their college loans.  And I've got no sympathy for those spoiled brats who are so clueless about what it takes to earn the kind of wealth they expect to have handed to them today. And I would have LOVED to kick Obama in the *** when he tries to tell me, "you didn't build that''!

I sure as **** DID, and all the government did year after year was to slow me down and hold me back from success with high taxes, absurd regulations, and fines when I didn't follow those regulations to the letter!

My next door neighbor's 27 year old son has a 2023 Raptor... and is moving back in with them this weekend because he wants to save up for a down payment for a house. He says he can't "get ahead" paying rent on an apartment and paying storage fees for his dirt bikes and ATV so, its the only way he'll ever be able to afford a house.

"Riches" is subjective to an individual's interpretation. 

I worked with a guy back in the late 80's that didn't have a pot to piss in at the time that ended up founding two pretty successful small businesses and selling both of them at the height of their worth for several million each before he was 40.

Another fella I went to HS with got into computer programming in the early 80's and ended up retiring from a State job as the head of the IT dept before he was 50 and then started consulting for about $200 an hour after.

Not at all, but they still started with **** and ended up in very good financial shape later in life. It definitely happens... it just depends on your definition of "riches".

I just want to go for a thrill ride. Never been in a vehicle with that kind of horsepower.

I'm not one to judge but those wants screw up a better retirement. This couple are late 20's, early 30's, no kids and are both Pharmacist professionals. I'm guessing they are grossing $300k. They can probably afford a nice toy.

Lord knows I've been out on a limb before living beyond our means at times. Eventually you have to buckle down.
It gets much more difficult if a household doesn't have a significant income.

IQ is not the most important factor

Somebody with amazing communication skills should easily be able to accumulate more wealth than some PhD nerd working in a physics lab 

Just look at all these grifters / self help gurus who sold millions of copies of books. Are they extraordinary IQ? No…just amazing salespeople.

The economy and stock market both are going to crash soon so…not the worst outcome. 

Somewhat embarrassing…but I think he’d rather deal with a bit of humiliation than be broke wage slaving all the time. 

Corporate America these days is also a grifter’s haven…your “likability” matters infinitely more than your ability to get a job done. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn’t seen how incompetent some of these idiots are. There’s a reason Dilbert is such a popular comic strip.

well there is a bit of a reductio ad absurdum when you bring up taxpayers because of course nobody could 'make money' if they dont live in some society that recognizes the value of money. Obviously nobody can have wealth all by themselves...other people have to exist.

Money is itself just a sort of illusion that everyone agrees to pretend is real.

So I guess we could be left pondering what 'rags to riches' even means on some fundamental level.
