Tuition is approximately 3.5 times higher than inflation. Graduates don't stand a chance. They lost before they even started.

The odd thing is that the education isn't any better than when the tuition was on par with inflation. They purged the costs with no extra value.

Tuition is what it is because of demand. I don't know about you, but from the time I was in High School it was drilled into my head that I would never equate to **** in life without a college degree, and that simply wasn't true... at all.

One of the main reason so many grads today are upside down on degree salaries vs. what they borrowed for said degree is because they were sold a lie.

Nobody twisted their arms to borrow that tuition money... they voluntarily dug that hole, and jumped in it... all on their own.

Thanks.

It's just different though. People don't go to college to get smart. They go to get a degree so they can live somewhat decently. Of course you don't need an education to succeed in life. There are plenty of examples of that. However, it is exponentially easier to get a better paying job with a degree. Graduates aren't smarter than non-graduates. However, they do have an edge.

That's actually not true. It started with Bill Clinton's millennial scholarship. The feds removed the cap on how much students can borrow. There used to be a limit. The universities then started to hike up their tuition because they knew they would get the money. Of course, it all falls back on the student at the end.

My bad.

I see golfboy got it. I forgot to type that part at the beginning of my reply... LOL

Yep.

Its very similar to the housing bubble that popped in 2008.

I knew we were in trouble when I found out they were giving 30 year mortgages to 25 year olds that were working at the Dell call center making $12.50 an hour.

LOL

Yes. It was crazy. Have you seen the Big Short with Christian Bale or Margin Call with Kevin Spacy? Excellent films. Both films are about the 2008 housing crisis.

No I haven't, but I'll add them to the list.

I knew several people that had really nice homes in the mid 2000's that had absolutely no business holding those notes... and of course they lost everything in 2008. It's a tell when you go see your buddy's new place and he shows you an empty house because he can't swing the mortgage and furniture at the same time.

I knew one couple that had three kids living in a nice new 3400 sq foot McMansion and everyone was sleeping on air mattresses because they couldn't afford beds.

It was nuts.

Real estate agents, banks and regulators are all to blame...

looking for our first house, we were told we qualify for x amount of money...my wife and I both looked at each other and laughed...it would have been the McMansion couple... I guess we were too realistic figuring in food, transport, heat, insurance, taxes, etc, etc, etc...

Even though it wasn't called it then, the 08-09 RE loan fiasco was the beginning of DEI.

I couldn't believe it. Out here there were 1500 square foot homes going for 500k+  in mediocre areas.

Even though it wasn't called it then, the 08-09 RE loan fiasco began DEI. Financial capability was not important, but fitting the right profile did.

Its doing that here now, but with a lot tight restrictions than in the mid 2000's.

There are 1500 sq foot homes being bought sight unseen for $350K that are being torn down to build a new 3000+ sq foot two story in its place... that will end up on the market for $1.5 mil.

One of the rebuilds that went up last fall sold before Christmas for 1.8

This is literally happening in my neighborhood as I type, and its not hurting my feelings at all since our house is paid for.
