Not only were banks instructed to offer mortgages to unqualified borrowers, mostly minorities, but they were also told that if the loan went bad, the government would cover their loss.  Then when the housing market crashed in 2008, they tried to throw all the blame on those same banks for making the loans they were REQUIRED to make! 

On this I had first-hand experience in learning what the banks and government were doing when I converted the large commercial factory I owned into low-income housing. 

It stunk then, and it still stinks now!

That would go a long way on a decent house payment....I'm renting now as we are currently building, and just hate throwing that money away. I realize the insurance and property taxes are saved, but still want something to show for the receipts at year's end.

I think it all comes out the same at the end. I don't see it throwing away money. It depends on the chosen lifestyle. We have never valued home ownership. It just isn't important to us. Renting works well for us.
