Turtles can be a problem, but they can be eliminated. If the pond is infested it will take a minute to get them all, but it is possible. I helped a buddy clean out a pond on some land he bought years ago and it took most of a season to get them all.Cannonpointer » 27 May 2024, 5:50 pm » wrote: ↑ I have a lake or a pond, depending on your definition. It's only about 50 feet across, but it is spring-fed and it feeds a creek, so allegedly that makes it a "lake." It's still a pond, though.
And it attracts roaming turtles who attack anything and everything that hits the water. So if I buy ducks, I gotta buy a .22 rifle and an easy chair.

Hell, man, I got a back deck about 50 yards from the pond.*rippy38 » 27 May 2024, 6:20 pm » wrote: ↑ Turtles can be a problem, but they can be eliminated. I forget what kind of fish it is, but there is a freshwater species that will take care of the baby turtles before they have a chance to grow, but the adults will have to be culled to get rid of them.
A .22 and comfy lawn chair will definitely do the trick. I suggest sighting in a decent scope out to about 50 yards and getting some quality ammunition. A .410 works well too if the noise isn't a problem. Lol
That's pretty funny. They can be a lot more aggressive than chickens. The drakes can be downright bellicose. If there are ducklings, the aggression factor doubles. They way they flap away, a lot of animals think they're bad-asses who know karate.DeezerShoove » 27 May 2024, 6:22 pm » wrote: ↑ My neighbor's ducks would wander all the way to my place. I didn't think ducks had that much of a range.
Plus there's hawks and coyotes hanging around.
But a'waddlin' they did come...
If you can get a good view of the heads poking out of the water for air from there, that would be fun.Cannonpointer » 27 May 2024, 7:40 pm » wrote: ↑ Hell, man, I got a back deck about 50 yards from the pond.
Problem with a 410 isn't noise - it's that the turtles don't suffer.

Yeah but a garter snake can't do nearly as ominous of a wing flap.DeezerShoove » 27 May 2024, 9:48 pm » wrote: ↑ Have you ever been bitten by a duck? A garter snake will hurt you way more.

If a garter snake had wings to flap, I would have one as a pet. Sadly, their only natural defense other than flight is to take a **** on whatever is perceived as threatening to them.DeezerShoove » 28 May 2024, 6:16 am » wrote: ↑ But if he did . . . wow.
That would be worth a broken arm.

Considering that Brazil is a member of BRICS, I would imagine there is significant economic activity and cooperation between the two countries.31stArrival » 28 May 2024, 4:35 pm » wrote: ↑ Let us know how deep China is buried in to the Brazilian economy when you get back.. I have rather strong positive feelings about garter snakes. I see them as a credit to their race.DeezerShoove » 28 May 2024, 5:01 pm » wrote: ↑ Well, they are a serpent and have that flickering tongue thing going on.
Evil incarnate is on their side.
Of course that doesn't help when a heathen with a shovel is coming for you.

One of life's great pleasures for me is encountering garter snakes in the wild - or much better, in my yard. Where I live now, I must settle for the occasional rat snake - another serpent ally that I protect and covet. But I would trade ten rat snakes for a garter - I just adore those little fellas.
Happily, most species of garter snakes are in excellent shape - wide ranging and numerous and not under threat. If memory serves, only one species is at risk, and it is listed as somewhere beneath endangered.DeezerShoove » 28 May 2024, 5:31 pm » wrote: ↑ In Michigan, they are all over the place.
I may have killed one once when I was a kid. Don't actually recall for sure.
But that would have been when I was 9 or 10. Stupid (if it happened).
Never hurt once since (might have been only a witness to the murder in the first place. Fuzzy memory.)
I got bit by one when I was about 12-13. Big one. I scared him and he jumped at me.
He got his needle fangs in my forearm so I had to shake him off.
Yeah, I'm like you about them. They eat **** I don't like sometimes. So they are on my side.
