It might. I remember the democrats supporting a high ranking Klansman who use the N word well into the late 90s.  Many Senators spoke lovingly about him at his funeral in 2010.  One of those who did is the current President.

Byrd was a FORMER klansman who disavowed the organization shortly after his brief association with them.  I have no doubt that his leadership in the democratic party may very well have upset some black voters at the time, but I think if you look at how they actually voted from, say, 1968 on, you'd have to say that that upset feeling did not translate to any measurable number of defections from the Democratic party.
