Seems like a self-perpetuating machine.
I can't bring myself to say "Thank you for your service" when I doubt they actually ever did anything but hold a job.
That has to be true for the majority of veterans. Maybe I'm wrong...
There's the school of thought that "battle hardened troops" make for a much better military.
How else do you keep them battle hardened but by fighting?
I'm not sure that is even a consideration when getting into yet another scrap. Not for the elite anyway...

Aircraft carriers are still the gold standard of global platforms. I don't thank vets for their service unless it comes to light that they burned their paychecks and paid for their own panties and pastries. The rest of us had to work in the adult world, in order for them to have the luxury of someone else being responsible for them.
