LOL!!!  Zelinsky will probably not be around for the rebuilding.  He will more than likely be on his $75 MILLION yacht in the South Pacific...besides we taxpayers will go further in debt to rebuild while the corrupt **** in Congress will make cuts to Social Security to cover-up for all the money they have squandered and stolen.

Coming into modern times has been the ambition of the Russians for centuries. They had a sprawling empire menaced on the west by occasionally ascendant european nations - britian, france, and germany, by turns - and on the east by mongol hordes. If that was not enough, they had viking invasions from the north to concern themselves with for several centuries, and they were not without threats from turks to their south from time to time. Add snow, bears, and distance to the mix, and the russians had a pretty hard go for a thousand years or so.

And they were all the time trying to be part of europe, trying to catch their fair share of the renaissance and western science. It wasn't easy for them, and it made them sneaky and tough. The collapse of the soviet union was a humanitarian disaster of enormous scope. It left millions of ethnic russians without a country. These were russians born in captive nations, but citizens only of a now defunct federal government. Russians by ethnicity but not by nationality, their passports rendered meaningless, these people were without income and papers and citizenship - displaced persons is the official term. These people relied on european nations to take them in, give them work permits, allow them to start working toward citizenship. 

Russia itself was supine at the feet of the feasting west, her only protection a drunken thief named boris yeltsin - and yeltsin was holding a **** yard sale. Russia's entire state industry and infrastructure was sold to thieving "oligarchs" for far, far less than pennies on the dollar. And into this mix came a mid level cop named vladimir putin. And the times made the man. Slowly and surely, he took russia's dignity and property back from the thieving yahoodis who had stolen it. A lot of people had to die for this to happen, and die they did. Now, russia is in an ascendant period, and this is ENTIRELY the doing of the Great Vladimir.

Russia has a leader who is a nationalist. He is looking out for russia. It would be nice if we had this, but we don't. So all we can do - well, all I want to do, anyway - is watch and cheer and root for Vlad.

I think we were an exceptional nation overall. We rose to prominence then became used to that prominence.
The wars lost by other countries taught them to be wary in a way we are not.
A beat down can be a teachable moment. Ours is a slower, no less painful one.

Only time will tell how teachable our "moment" is and what the actual lessons are.

After we've lost, lay in ruins, who will help us get back on our feet?
