As far as this "sponsoring for permanent residence," that is something companies have no incentive to do, and would charge the employee for if they did it. What it might cost for me to buy and elephant is math that gets erased when I don't buy an elephant. 

Trump's promise is to return us to an immigration system that focuses on competence, talent, and usefulness to the country. You know - like BEFORE the 1960s. Back when we were raaaaay ciiiis.

And this issue certainly doesn't only effect union tradesmen..but  the numbers of Illegal alien tradesmen keeps growing and the number of Union Tradesmen keeps shrinking.
I never saw an Illegal alien on a Untion job site until about 1995 in Seattle. It was one of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research buildings and they had a few Illegal Aliens come in late at night to do the "fire proof sheet rocking" around the 100s of pipes that ran all over the place on the "mechanical system" half floors that were in between the floors that had the actual laboratories. Sealing off all of those pipes to retard the spread of fire with cleverly fabricated pieces of sheetrock.... followed up with a fire proof caulk was tedious work..but nevertheless it was work that Union Brothers and Sisters should have been doing to keep their homes, cars, pension plans, health insurance for themselves and their families running in tip top shape.
There was enough work there to keep a crew of US Citizens going for a significant amount of time.
