At the time aluminum was considered an inferior metal to use for cylinder heads..something that only race cars used.
Well it didn't take Japan long to get that problem figured out, I think they went with a higher quality of aluminum.
Since then, the Japs really raised the bar for how many miles we can expect to get from a drivetrain and they have also made a lot of advancements with power to weight ratios and clean burning..
