Fun Fact: The only reason I know about this - and quite a few other things about Castrati - is that I read Ann Rice's novel, Cry to Heaven, which was set in 19th Century Italy and had a Castrato - the scion of a rich family abducted at as a child and castrated by an enemy of his family and sold to musical production company - as a protagonist.

As I understand it, they were not STRICTLY given to the church. The church kept the sin at arm's length, as regards the castration itself. Don't get me wrong. I am not hating on MJ. I view him very much as a victim - as I would view ANY gaslighted child.
