He did not break his word. He decided to try to serve his country in another capacity, which was his right. He had earned his retirement, and the military doesn't denigrate you for deciding to put in your retirement paperwork. Units go on when they lose leaders. It happens ALL the time. I would know. You wouldn't. The fact that he hadn't completed all of the training necessary to become a permanent command sergeant major meant he retired at the E-8 paygrade instead of E-9. I am quite sure HE didn't view that as a demotion, but simply the expected result of him retiring before finishing the CSM coursework.
