I think I'm in the middle. I have been fortunate (and disciplined) enough to be comfortable.

That helps with the sanity part quite a bit. ;)

The gain porn (+200%, +500%) is what keeps me excited. Even if the next trade is -40% and erases all if not more of the previous trade's gains.

Does he?

Mustn't he first quantify the LIKELIHOOD of each?

Have you ever considered what are the odds are of being the one, versus the odds of being the other?

For just one example, the former has to look over his shoulder and protect his pile; the latter is as free as a sparrow in the field, Who has the better chance of living a peaceful and sane existence?

Now, if you cast the poor fellow in your query as suffering from want and privations, then you might present a real dilemma. But in my view, what you present instead is a false choice. The fellow with less has more.

More freedom of movement, more ease, more leisure, more anonymity, more insouciance.

Of course, again, there are limits. I am not talking about people who live in trailer parks and have broken-down cars. Theirs is not an insouciant life. Theirs is a life marred by care and want and indignity. But in most matters, the middle ground is the safest and easiest to hold; and in most matters, life on the margin gets tricky.

I know that's sarcasm but the reality is the conjob retards think he is some kind of business genius when he's not.

Trump would've been financially better off if he just put his inheritance into the SP 500.

Would've returned much more than his Trump Resorts, Trump Steaks, Trump University, etc. BS

The guy who started Patagonia might be one of the few legitimate rags-to-riches stories. The price was living out of his car for 2 years selling "environmentally conscious" T shirts...most people would "go insane" as @Deezer Shoove might say - even contemplating such a routine. But he did it and AFAIK he gave most of it away and lives a normal middle class life without the wage slavery.

I have absolutely no knowledge of Trump's worth, the value of his inheritance, or the accuracy of your statement. But I DO know, for a fact, that by MY standard. and in my opinion the standard of any decent, non-sociopathic human being, Trump is a very, very **** businessman.

A good businessman makes his partners money. He's the train ya wanna ride - the horse ya wanna bet on. Trump busts his partners out. He might be a good CON man. But he is not a good BUSINESS man. A good businessman focuses on his areas of expertise. Trump spends his life in court rooms. And this is not to reference the sham trials - I'm talking about his history of business disputes and bankruptcies and earned trouble with regulators - like when they shut down his **** university. I STILL want back the part of my life spent reading Art of the Deal

To this very day, notwithstanding his status as an ex-POTUS, the Nevada Gaming Commission refuses to give his Vegas property a gaming license, due to his utterly shabby behavior in Atlantic City. He took a massive **** on that town that it took decades to get over.

They will find themselves forever on one or the other margin. And they will never be happy, so long as they have that mindset. That is my opinion in the matter.

I worked for a fellow some 30 years back, and he was one hard working son of a bitch. He was not nearly as smart as I am. But he more than compensated by how diligent he was, whereas I was more of a flighty fellow - insouciant. Dabble here, raise rabble there - to one thing constant never.

Anyway, he shared his goal with me. He wanted to have a million dollars worth of equity in commercial property, and then he would retire and live the good life. I decided to make it my mission to help him realize his dream, as he had always been square with me, and I loved him as a brother. And I did. And all the things that he had told me he wanted to do - WOULD do - once he had reached his goal? He put them all on hold, because he set a new goal. A million was not enough. I asked him what WOULD be enough, and his face was pained when he told me, "I don't know."

Several years back, I sat with him. We met up in Mexico, down in Baja. And I went over with him what he had told me, and I asked him what was his new goal. And he sat there - we were drinking and playing with magic powders, but only as tourists and not as degenerates or anything - and he got it. He literally got it. And he made a radical change. He chose to be content. He was not at a level to excite envy or invite robbery. He was just living a nice, upper middle class existence, taking in perhaps 200k per year. And he just stopped being acquisitive.

Whereas he had been doing all of his own work on his properties, jealous of any penny he might have to pay a tradesman, he made the decision to never step on another ladder and never tar another roof and never lift another paint brush or frame-out another interior to suit a new tenant. He chose to pay others for that work. He chose to be content.

When I was down in Brazil in early Summer, I invited him to come on down and spend a few weeks with me. He came for ten days, and we relaxed and drank a few beers and saw some sights. I have never seen him so light on his feet, so **** carefree. I was delighted for him. I AM delighted for him. I still smile each time I think of him - each time I picture him at last at home with himself and happy with his lot.

The same advice that I gave to him, I would give to you. The middle ground is the easiest to hold, and is marked by the least care. Poverty and immense wealth are flip sides of the same coin. One has plusher pillows than the other, but both are hard roads,

I had one stock that taught me a HUGE lesson.

I lost pretty much all of my savings on some "advice".
The stock eventually had dropped to a penny stock in a very short time frame.
I figured "oh **** it" and dropped the last of my account's balance on the **** stock. Way unwise thing to do.

Unbelievably it bounced back to almost exactly where my books balanced out. The next week I sold it all and called it a lesson learned. I lucked out big time.

That company was nonexistent in about 2 months. I was almost $100 to the good. whew...
