My neighbor had ducks. Jumbo eggs by the bucketful.
They could not give them away fast enough...   many a young duck spoiled in the bucket.  
Running a herd of about 2 dozen bill was too much.
They quit a few years ago due to laziness, novelty gone, cholesterol, whatever.

So, are your chickens edible or landfill when they "retire"?

They'll go in a soup pot is all - for stock and dog food.

I bring bones down to mulch and then grind them to meal, which, along with the meat (I take the meat off the bones after 30 minutes at a boil), feeds my dogs. 

I boil the bones for 5 or 6 hours until my pot renders a condensed stock that congeals when it cools. I then freeze the bones, and after I have a few bags of previously rendered frozen bones, I combine them to make yet another pot of stock. It is after this second rendering that I grind the bones into meal. If I have a dog with a loose bowel, I give him a nice portion of that meal to bind him up. 

I always have stock on hand. I use the stock in anything/everything that requires water. Everything on my table is premium because the flavors are built in through prep. 

My birds are a typical backyard flock. Most of them are an ungodly mix-up of egg birds and dual purpose breeds. I see a lot of barred rock in my flock, and I am about 80% sure there was a golden comet in the woodpile, because I'm seeing a goodly number of double-yolkers. I have 16 hens and 2 roosters, and the alpha rooster is almost 100% barred rock.

He is a sterling example of a rock-solid rooster. He is extremely watchful and brave, putting himself between the flock and danger. He is quite people friendly - he sees us as a source of both food and protection. He was actually IN THE MOUTH of a rogue daylight coyote when a shout distracted the dog, enabling his escape. Whenever there are varmints about, he will raise hell to get me out there between the varmints and the flock. I do not exaggerate to say that he is consciously partnered with us for the protection of the flock. He's a smart **** bird. 

Having only two roosters prevents my hens from becoming featherless rape objects. I have genuine affection for my birds, so over-roostering them is something I will never do. My flock is exceptionally well socialized. I don't have a pecked hen in the bunch, and the seemingly alpha hen is actually a little squirt of a (primarily) golden comet. She comes running in the house for attention anytime a door is open!

By the way, I **** LOVE duck eggs. But not enough to get ducks. They don't roost, or use a nesting box, so it's a nonstop Easter egg hunt. And ya can never be sure how old that egg you just found really is. So ya have to crack duck eggs into a separate container before adding them to the pan. 

The best thing about a duck, for my money, is rendering its oil when ya bake it. Duck butter is the **** jam when it comes to frying a lot of things - including chicken eggs.

I think the critters enjoy them before I see many of them. Probably why ducks pop them all over.
10 eggs have a chance to produce 1 duckling. Farm ducks instinctually do that maybe.

I heard chickens don't really have a "wild" equivalent. Baby chicks would never survive in the wild.
They'd be peeping and wandering until something finally ate them. No trail cred.

I guess the notion is that a domesticated dog may live a decent life, go feral, have kids, etc.

Chickens (Chadam & Cheve) would not produce much of a legacy.
