When Jimmy Carter was president, the US reported HONEST unemployment and inflation numbers. (We know for a fact because those numbers were bad)*Vegas » 01 Oct 2024, 10:05 am » wrote: ↑ It's impossible to trust government stats anymore. Though I don't know if we ever could. Reagan’s admin began the trend to massage those numbers (for example, he included military service members as among the “employed” when previously they had been excluded from the count).
What about other data such as GDP , job creation numbers, etc...LowIQTrash » 01 Oct 2024, 12:28 pm » wrote: ↑ I edited my previous comment and added more info.
There is a lot of historical context to how the calculations have changed, and admittedly I am not an expert on all the details.
All I know is that if the US govt “honestly” reported the data, the actual numbers would be significantly worse. Just like how we should assume homelessness is at least 3x (likely 4-5x) more than what is reported by Dept of HUD as PROVEN by my OP.

I don’t believe they are faking GDP numbers…despite what everyone thinks, it’s one of the least impactful and is only useful for policy wonks and economics obsessed types.*Vegas » 01 Oct 2024, 12:34 pm » wrote: ↑ What about other data such as GDP , job creation numbers, etc...

The peripheral numbers seem more likely to be targets since everyone cares about them (inflation, unemployment, jobs created using the highly and deliberately flawed birth/death model)
Consumer expectations have certainly risen, that's for sure. But autos have also gotten better. They go 300-plus thousand miles instead of being junk at 100k. They are safer, smoother, altogether better - and they still cost the same amount in 2024 as they did in 1960s: about one year's pay. If you make 18k, there's a car for you. If you make 24k, there is a car for you. If you make 30k, there is a car for you. If you make 70k, there is a car for you. If you make a hundred k, you get two cars.
