Let’s look at each key component, spending, regulation, and taxes, in turn. Contrary to popular belief, the relationship between the party in the White House and government outlays is the opposite of what one might expect.
Under Carter, total government outlays as a percent of gross domestic product averaged a relatively stable 20.8 percent. Over the next 12 years, when Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush resided in the White House, spending increased, averaging 22.2 percent of GDP.
The trend reversed under the Democratic leadership of Bill Clinton. Government on average consumed 19.8 percent of GDP during his term. Finally, Republicans under George W. Bush undid the progress made during the Clinton years with spending rising from just 18.2 percent of GDP in his first year, to 20.7 percent by the time he left office.

I know, right?
Try telling these innumerate **** that..
I have made that very point on this board numerous times.
I cannot remember whether your stint in this hellscape coincided with that of Glory Hole Clem, but I ran him OFF THE BOARD by contrasting Reagan's soshalizum with Carter's conservatism.
Clem read the WSJ editorial page each morning - admittedly and quite proudly - to get his talking points for the day.
He once - and I swear this is true - complained that my statistical arguments were constructed by me, personally, and not by any think tank or respected presenter. He did not question the data - he dared not, as I used only government sources. He could not confute my arguments ABOUT the data, as they were pretty straight forward presentations of what the BLS recorded as true history.
I proved that Carter cut the civilian side of government - the side that actually takes your money and spends it - while maintaining the growth of the military at about the same pace as the growth of society. I proved that Reagan shrank the military ranks in relation to the growth of society, while growing the civilian side of government - the
bureaucracy - at a clip much faster than the growth of the population. In other words, Reagan did the exact opposite of what he promised, and what Glory Hole's talking points insisted Reagan did.
He could no longer post on a board where the moderators said such crazy things, and backed them up with government sources. He fled with the thwack thwack thwack of outraged flip flops, leaving only the lingering stench of an unwashed house robe.
