Being from the South, I am anti-Union.  I don't run from this, I embrace it.  Unions are today synonymous with Mafia.  They shake down businesses to enrich the Union Bosses and their lawyers.  They run small businesses into the ground, demanding that the proprietors of those businesses pay the extortion or be forced to shut down.  Many owners who do not want to be part of the Union Syndicate simply close their doors.  I have seen this first hand.

Now, I'm not saying there is no place for workers engaging in collective bargaining - but we need tougher laws restricting what they can and cannot do.

If you are on a union job and you see that the Contractor is doing something unsafe [or patently wrong like using Illegal Aliens during a "top secret" grave yard shift...you report it to your union rep. 
The Rep contacts the Contractor and the problem either gets taken care of or the next step is for the Union Workers to walk off the job. I've taken part in 3 or 4 "wobbles" and each and every time we were back to work the next day with the problem solved.
I NEVER saw this on a non union job.
There once were a State Compliance Officers in the old days checking to see if your license is current and to make sure you are being paid the prevailing union wage [if you were non union while working a government job]
Now that Illegal Aliens are a very common sight those Compliance Officers are nowhere to be found .

The PART the LWNJ idiots don't seem to get is that COLLECTIVE BARGAINING raises prices FAR MORE than any TARIFFS ever could.

ONE they are for, the other they are against. ONE causes jobs to be LOST as the OTHER creates FAR MORE JOBS in this country than the former ever could.

Sadly, idiots like BV don't have a **** CLUE about REAL LIFE SCENARIOS. He can only give you FAILED "textbook" ideology.

You and I are viewing "Unions" from different perspectives.  From my vantage point, I see what they have done to small businesses in the South - essentially destroying them.  I have also seen what they have done to large school systems throughout the South, particularly community colleges.  

From your vantage point you are seeing how they interface with Contractors hired to do a particular job. Its like we are both looking at the same thing through different glasses.  Your glasses give you tunnel vision blocking out the bigger picture I am seeing.  And mine are wide-angle which perhaps do not show me see some of the details you see.

While this may be true, I have no fundamental problem with collective bargaining.  Workers should be able to unite to negotiate for better wages and conditions - that's only fair. But, businesses should be empowered with the ability to hire new workers - yes replacement workers -  where the workers' demands are unreasonable.  Take for example the recent Dockworker's Strike.  It is unreasonable for workers to dictate to their employers what technology they can and cannot use, and when that happens, the Union should be made to pay the price of "overreach".

I have ALWAYS stated that Public Sector Unions have a history of helping to bankrupt the governments they work for.
I don't live where private small businesses are forced to hire "overpaid" union labor, then as a result go out of business...so I've never seen that happen.
