Well, the whole point of having owners put a lot of work into these homes is 1) to ensure they are capable of being productive and 2) give them a sense of pride in building their house and ownership.  People tend to be a lot more protective of those things they worked hard for.  I actually think there is something to this.

They wanted to make the program appear that the recipients weren't just getting a total hand out...I get that.

Certainly, there is a charitable element to the program.  But, making them work on their houses was not meant to be just for appearances.

I'm just wondering, are you really against the concept of Habitat for Humanity? Assuming that owners really must do work on their own homes as part of the program, how is this a bad thing?  A private charity helping people to build a house they can live in.  Where's the hidden "evil"?

How can you be sure how much work all of the recipients actually did...?
Was that a condition of eligibility..to be physically capable of doing X amount of work...?

I was familiar with this program some years back.  I know with this particular program they had to contribute a substantial amount of work - at least when I was familiar with it. These were all stick-built houses, not block houses. 

There were more blacks than whites applying to Habitat for Humanity even years ago.  But, so what? Taking pride in home ownership keeps people from tearing **** up. It gives them stability and a chance at a decent life. I'm ok with that.

Their hyper-focus on black people is a fairly new change.  Not one that I would approve of. Like I said, I was familiar with this program years ago.  And, the way it was administered then made it a worthy charity.
